Der Kleiber sammelt Insekten unter der Borke von Bäumen. Im Gegensatz zum Specht hat der Kleiber aber keinen Stützschwanz, sondern läuft mit dem Kopf voran am Baumstamm abwärts. Mit seiner starken hinteren Kralle hängt er sich zur Stabilisierung in die Borke ein. Im Vergleich zu Baumläufer und Kleinspecht besetzt der Kleiber vor allem die Nahrungsnische im oberen Stammbereich. Dort sucht er nach Insekten und Spinnen.
